Since catching the ‘bug’ after being accidentally cast in a school play, Sboniso Thombeni has been active as a versatile performer, theatre-maker and now arts writer/facilitator.
Sboniso’s agility as an actor, dancer/choreographer, voice artist and facilitator which speaks to a history of extensive training. Alumni of the National School of Arts and Rhodes University, Thombeni finished at the top of the class at both institutions. Furthermore, whilst training he also amassed a diverse range of professional performing, choreographic and review writing credits at several National Arts Festivals. Notable productions include e=mc2(squared) [2013], Twist Playwriting Series [2016], Skinned [2018] .
In 2020, Sboniso was part of the Kwasha! Theatre Company, a creative arts internship program by the Market Theatre and Windybrow Arts Centre. As a part of Kwasha! Thombeni performed alongside the Standard Bank Young Artist Award recipient (Theatre 2020), Jefferson Tshabalala on the Virtual National Arts Festival Main Program.
In addition to this, amid a global pandemic, Sboniso took part in a transcontinental play on Zoom, The Art of Facing Fear by Brazilian theatre company Os Satyros. Then there was Peeling Shadows and Log(in), the latter being a video art exploration of sex work online conceptualised/directed by Sboniso.
