Frances Elizabeth van Rooyen is an actress who loves dancing, physical theatre, singing, wardrobe design, writing, and directing. She is incredibly excited to enter the theatre and film industry and learn from the admirable talent inhabiting it. Her greatest wish is to continue to hone a strong relationship with her craft and that it will continue to inspire growth, personally and professionally.
Frances is currently completing her degree as an Honours Writing and Directing student. In 2024, she performed her first multi-award nominated production, Die Twede ete na Pa se dood op die dag van Pa se dood, ‘n jaar later at Vrystaat Kunstefees – which was nominated for Best Ensemble alongside Waiting for Godot. She has also had the privilege of being Assistant Director and choreographer to André K. Gerber for Stellenbosch University’s Drama departmental show, The Candidate. Furthermore, Frances received an award for Best Actress in a Lead Role in 2022 for Stroop, which performed at Kaapstad Toneelhuis. In 2024, she was nominated for Best Actress in a Lead and Best Actress in a Supporting Role at Premiére Fees.
Nothing excites Frances more than starting a new project and being part of telling a new story. An incredibly physical actress, she draws on an investigation of physical language and expression to make sense of and support decisions in her other fields. This is also true for the way she interacts with visual stimuli. It is her understanding that mundane things can be exceptional inspirations in the creation of theatre and film.
Her curiosity about people’s behaviour and psychology has always driven her toward a detailed understanding of every character she encounters. She hopes to bring light, a keen listening ear, a malleable mind and body, and curiosity into any process she enters.
