Bio:

Melusi is a trained clown, physical theatre practitioner, voice artist, and scriptwriter. He draws inspiration from marginalized communities and the downtrodden. Beyond his theatrical endeavours, he has a rich history of student activism, advocating for free education and the insourcing of workers. Melusi also possesses a powerful bass/tenor singing voice.

Melusi Molefe began his journey in the arts after initially studying journalism. His involvement in student activism led him to drop out and pursue his passion for acting. He connected with peers from a creative arts college who mentored him, setting the stage for his early successes. Melusi won awards at the KwaMashu Multi Arts Centre Theatre Festivals, including the Intimate Festival of Men and Isigcawu.

Melusi’s talent earned him the Arts and Culture Trust Scholarship, allowing him to study at the Market Theatre Lab, where he graduated in 2021. He further honed his craft during an internship with the Kwasha Theatre Company, contributing to the production of One Night with Modjadji.

In theatre, Melusi’s notable achievements include winning Best Ensemble and Best Tertiary Incubation Awards at the Naledi Awards for No Easter Sunday for Queers by Koleka Putuma and Eclipsed Phifalo ya Ngwedi – a play about Life Esidimeni by Sylvain Strike and Gina Schmukler.

Melusi prides himself on having been mentored by industry stalwarts such as Monageng Motshabi, Omphile Molusi, with voice training by Alex Haligey, and screen acting tutelage by Mongiwekhaya.

Most recently, Melusi has been performing in schools around Cape Town as part of Magnet Theatre’s Theatre for Young Audiences program. He is currently a member of the Magnet Theatre Youth Company.
