Thishiwe Ziqubu (Pronouns He/Him/They/Them—assigned female at birth) is a prolific, multi-award-winning actor based in Johannesburg. They studied 'Acting for Screen' at the New York Film Academy's Los Angeles campus.
Thishiwe recently starred in the British queer road film Low Rider directed by Campbell X, the thriller short Dread, as well as Elan Gamaker’s period horror, White by Night, all currently in post-production. Other international work includes the Clement Virgo series Book of Negroes opposite Cuba Gooding Jnr and the star-studded Kevin Hooks biopic Madiba alongside Laurence Fishburne and Orlando Jones.
Locally, Thishiwe stars in the epic Blood Psalms, The Imposter Season 1, It’s Complicated Season 1&2, Rhythm City and more. Local films include Zee Ntuli’s action romance Hard to Get, Akin Omotoso’s romcom Tell Me Sweet Something, Catherine Stewart’s queer film While You Weren’t Looking and Omotoso’s immigrant drama Man on Ground.
Thishiwe has won numerous Best Actress Awards for Their work, particularly Best Actress in a Feature for Hard to Get at the SAFTAs and Best Actress at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) for the same movie. They were nominated for Best Actress in a Feature for While You Weren’t Looking at the SAFTAs the following year. They also won Best Supporting Actress for Tell Me Sweet Something at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAAs). They were nominated in the same category for the same film at the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs).
