In loving memory of Nandi Nyembe

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mam’ Nandi Nyembe (1950–2025).

More than an actress, Mam’ Nandi was a cornerstone of our MLA family – a teacher, a mentor, a storyteller, and a friend. Her wisdom and generosity touched everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her, and her artistry continues to inspire audiences across South Africa and beyond.

A Journey in the Arts

Nandi’s career began in 1971 with a play written and directed by Sol Rachilo. By 1979, she had joined the Market Theatre as a bar attendant, where visiting directors quickly recognised her talent.

In 1980, she joined the world-touring cast of Sophia Town directed by Malcolm Purkey, performing in France, Germany, San Francisco, and London. This was followed by unforgettable stage roles in Curl Up and Dye (Loucille Gilward), Afrika My Child (Benny Francis), and Nicholas Ellenbogen’s acclaimed works Horn of Sorrow and The Eagle.

Screen and Stage Legacy

On screen, Mam’ Nandi became a household name, with credits including If This Be Treason, Bra Solly's Kitchen, Gazlam, Yizo Yizo, Zone 14, Isibaya, Isthembiso, The Queen, Isono, The River (Season 6), Adulting (Seasons 1 & 2), Still Breathing, and How to Ruin Christmas.

Her film work was equally remarkable, spanning titles such as A Reasonable Man, Saturday Night at the Palace, Yesterday, Place of Weeping, and more recently, Bl(i)nd The Sacrifice and Courting Anathi, directed by Akin Omotoso.

A Lasting Legacy

Mam’ Nandi’s contribution to the arts is immeasurable. She gave voice to stories that mattered and created performances that will live on in the hearts of audiences and colleagues alike.

Thank you, Mam’ Nandi, for your extraordinary gift. Your light will forever shine in our MLA family.
